Academician Chun-Yen Chan's Personal Profiles
Chun-Yen Chang was born in Feng-Shan, Taiwan. He received B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, in 1960. MS and PHD degree in 1962,1970 respectively both from National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan.
He has contributed profoundly to the areas of microelectronics, microwave and optoelectronics, including the invention of the method of low-pressure-MOCVD-using tri-ethyl–gallium to fabricate LED, laser, and microwave devices. Pioneering works on Zn-incorporation (1968), nitridation (1984) and Fluorine-incorporation (1984) in SiO2 for ULSIs.” charge transfer in semiconductor-oxide-semiconductor system(1968)” ,“carrier transport across metal-semiconductor barriers(1970)”, “theory of metal-semiconductor contact resistivity(1971)”. In 1963, he instructed to establish a high vacuum laboratory which was finished in 1964.
He and his colleagues founded the nation first and the state-of-the-art Semiconductor Research Center (SRC) at NCTU with a facility for silicon planar device processing, where they made the nation’s first Si planar transistor in April 1965, and subsequently the first IC in August 1966, which strongly forms the foundation of Taiwan hi-tech development. Since 1964, he supervised MS and PHD students and lectured solid state physics, quantum mechanics, semiconductor devices and other technological-related classes.
In 1969, he became full professor. From 1977 to 1987, he single-handedly established a strong electrical engineering and computer science program at NCKU where GaAs, a-Si, poly-Si researches were established in Taiwan for the first time. In 1987, he returned back to NCTU, serving as the founding president of National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL) from 1990 to 1997. In 1997, he became Director of the Microelectronics and Information System Research Center (MIRC) of NCTU (1997–1998). For his continuous devotion to research and education, many of his former students have since become founders of the most influential high-tech enterprises in Taiwan, namely UMC, TSMC, Winbond, MOSEL, Acer, Leo, etc. In August 1, 1998, he was appointed as the President of NCTU (1998-2006). As the National-Endowed-Chair Professor and President of NCTU, his vision is to lead the university for excellence in science, engineering, humanity and art, as well as biological science and technology. During his presidency in NCTU, the amount of papers contributed from NCTU to the most important journals of IEEE reached to the top 1 in the world. To strive forward to world class multidisciplinary university is the main goal to which he and his colleagues have committed. In 2002, in order to establish strong system design capability, he initiated the” National program of system on chip”, based on strong Taiwanese semiconductor foundry.
In 2006, Taiwanese papers contributed to ISSCC significantly improved from almost nothing to number three in the world. Dr. Chang received the IEEE fellow award (1987) and the third millennium medal in 2000. He is a member of Academia Sinica (1996) and the only “foreign” Associate of the National Academy of Engineering U.S.A(2000), “For his contribution to Taiwanese electronics industry ,education and material technology”. “Without professor Chang’s leadership, Taiwanese electronics industry could not so flourish not only to the economy of Taiwan, but also to the world,” as one of the member of NAE cited. He is the recipient of the NIKKEI ASIA PRIZE for SCIENCE category 2007 from Japan and all these honors represent appreciation to Prof. Chang’s outstanding contribution to both technology and academy.
