Academician Tien Tzou Tsong

Academician Tien Tzou Tsong's Personal Profiles

Professor Tien T. Tsong was a native of Taichung Hsien, Taiwan. For junior high, he attended Taichung First Middle School. He then attended Taichung Technical High School. After high school, he worked as a technician in Taiwan Telephone Co. for two years. He then entered the physics program of the department of physics and chemistry of Taiwan Normal University.

After graduation, he went to work in National Taiwan University Hospital for four years as a health physicist. During this period, he also spent one and a half years in the air force as a supply officer. In 1992, he was able to obtain a Fulbright travel grant to go to the United States where he attended the physics department of the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D in 1966. He was asked to stay in the department as research associate, then was promoted to assistant professor, associate professor, professor and finally to distinguished professor of physics. In 1990, he was invited to return to Taiwan to be director of the Institute of Physics of Academia Sinica. He stepped down from the directorship in 1999, but remained in the institute as a distinguished research fellow until 2004.

He has published over 350 papers in reputable professional journals and three well cited monographs. He has been invited to domestic and international symposia and well known physics research institutes around the world to give over 300 lectures and seminars. He has received many fellowships from different countries also.
